JARHEAD

A CINEMATIC EXERCISE in Boredom.

March 8th, 2006

I watch the movie Jarhead the other night with my wife and to tell you quite honestly, I wasn't really impressed with it. While I didn't really hate it either, it just didn't have anything to keep my engrossed in the movie. I'll admit that if I had read a little bit about the film on some jerks website, I probably would have liked it more. I would have known that it was supposed to be slow and boring look at boredom. I have nothing against slow and boring films that are packed with massive amount of homo-erotic banter, but I just don't get off on it. It's cool if you want to tell the self introspective tail of a marine that never sees any action and pisses himself at the first sound of gunfire, but I'm not that into it. I spent literally month after month packed onto a ship with Marines, so I can tell you something about boring deployments. Maybe someone should do an introspective about my experiences in the Navy; at least we got to see the Marines go running for the head or the side to loose their lunch every 10

minutes. Now that's action compared to this film. As far as the Marines, as a Navy man who served on a Gator Freighter, (you Marines will know what that is,) I have great respect for them and I have never seen a single one loose their military bearing the way the men in this film do almost constantly. Of course military life is slow and boring followed by brief moments of over the top exhilaration. Unfortunately, I just couldn't find the exhilaration. This one get's 3 BATHROOM BREAKS.
